VCA vs. Motion Detection – Learn More with Holly at IFSEC

Do you know the difference between Video Content Analysis (VCA) and Motion Detection? In simplest terms, motion detection reveals just that – something is moving, or it is not. But VCA can provide much more comprehensive security coverage, such as identifying a car or a human, with a lower false alarm rate and lower cost of ownership than motion detection. But they both have their benefits and we invite you to learn more from VideoIQ’s Chief Marketing and Sales Officer, Holly Tsourides, as she will be giving a presentation on VCA vs. Motion Detection at IFSEC International Wednesday, May 16 at 12:30 p.m. … Continue reading

Video Surveillance Storage Part 2 – SD Cards vs SSD

Important considerations when evaluating short term storage options In our first entry on video surveillance storage, we discussed long term storage options and considerations. This entry will look at the different technology considerations for those seeking shorter-term storage. There are numerous situations when an integrator, remote monitoring company or end-user will need short term storage, typically a few days to a week of storage. In some cases this is because the cameras are being continuously monitored and any evidence of loss or a crime is found within minutes or hours, let alone days. In other cases, the surveillance solution includes … Continue reading

Video Surveillance Storage Part 1 – HDD vs Hybrid Storage

by Mahesh Saptharishi, PhD CTO and Chief Scientist Important considerations when evaluating long term storage options SSD storage is an expensive solution for long-term storage SSDs are thought of as an appealing option for long-term storage due to their perceived reliability and data throughputs. But, not all flash storage technologies are equal in performance. Those that measure up to expectations are cost prohibitive for long-term storage applications. HDD alone is not reliable HDD storage is the current standard for long-term storage, as it provides the best cost per GB with theoretically sufficient reliability to meet customers’ needs. Spinning magnetic media … Continue reading

Industry Trends – Distributed Storage

by Mahesh Saptharishi, PhD CTO and Chief Scientist One of the interesting and, in many ways gratifying, take aways we noted at ISC West was the adoption of storage at the edge as a valuable component in a comprehensive video surveillance system. As camera and VMS companies alike announced their support for storage at the edge, we wanted to share our experience with intelligent distributed storage. VideoIQ, over the past 4+ years, has been a strong proponent of the efficiency and flexibility benefits of intelligent distributed storage. As background you can read through our previous blog posts on distributed storage: … Continue reading

Detection vs Classification: Understanding Common Misconceptions in Analytic Range and Accuracy

A common challenge that end-users and integrators face when comparing video analytic technologies and vendor claims is effective range.   “Effective” range quoted by manufacturer’s can vary significantly and there can be obscurity as to what qualifies as “effective”. When evaluating a vendor’s analytic capabilities this is an important consideration as the range at which analytic solutions can detect the presence of an object (typically by movement) is very different from the range at which the analytics can accurately and reliably classify an object (e.g. classify an object as a person or vehicle versus an animal or blowing objects).  The key … Continue reading
